Die Idee

Aller Anfang ist Improvisation. Kinder können schon jahrelang munter plaudern, bis sie schließlich lesen und schreiben lernen, und unsere Vorfahren konnten schon jahrtausendelang musizieren, ohne Musik aufschreiben zu können und zu müssen. Zwar wurde im Lauf der Jahrhunderte Musik immer genauer schriftlich fixiert. Doch behauptet spontanes Musizieren bis heute seinen Platz im Musikleben, denn ohne Lebendigkeit wäre Musik nicht Kunst.

In Mittelalter, Renaissance und Barock wurde sowohl die schriftliche als auch die mündliche Musizierkultur gepflegt: Neben dem Spielen nach Noten konnten sich die Musiker damals in ihrer Musiksprache „frei ausdrücken“ – also improvisieren.

Heute gehört die historische Improvisationspraxis zu unserem kulturellen Erbe. Sie ist nicht nur wesentliches Element der „Wiederbelebung“ Alter Musik, sondern sogar bestes Mittel zum Zweck: Nämlich mittels Improvisation Alte Musik in ihrer Zeit abzuholen, für heutige Hörer emotional erfahrbar zu machen und ins Hier und Jetzt zu bringen – EX TEMPORE.

Alle zwei Jahre, seit 2009, findet das Festival statt und macht für vier Tage Leipzig zum Mekka der historischen Improvisation.

All beginnings are improvisations. Long before learning how to read and write, children chat chirpy, and thousands of years of music making preceded the first attempts of developing a musical notation. It is true that over the centuries music has been written down more and more precisely. But the appeal of spontaneous playing has always been tempting: Without vividness, music would not be art.

During the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and baroque periods, music was celebrated both in its written and oral forms. At the time, musicians were able to „speak“ their musical language freely – in other words, they could improvise.

Today, the historical practice of improvisation is part of our cultural heritage. As an essential element of Early music revival, it’s even the best mean to an end: Through improvisation, musicians today are able to gather the music of the past and bring it to the here and now – EX TEMPORE.

The festival has been taking place every two years since 2009, turning Leipzig into a Mecca of historical improvisation for four days.

Genießen (Konzerte), Lernen (Workshops) und Mitmachen (JamSessions): Liebe Festivalbesucher, entscheiden Sie selbst, in welchen Formen Sie am Festival teilnehmen möchten!

In den Konzerten erleben Sie einmalige und unwiederbringliche musikalische Kostbarkeiten. Meist treffen sich auf der Bühne Musiker, die noch nie vorher miteinander musiziert haben.

Die Workshops richten sich gleichermaßen an Studierende, an Profis, die sich weiterbilden möchten, an Amateure mit Ambitionen, an Kinder und Jugendliche (11-18 Jahre, am Sonntag) und an Tanzinteressierte (am Sonntag).

In der Festivalzentrale in der HMT (Dittrichring) wird für Verpflegung in den Pausen zwischen den Workshops gesorgt sein, und ein Bücher- und CD-Tisch bietet Gelegenheit zum Schmökern und Kaufen.

AlteMusik-JamSessions bringen kreative Köpfe aus ganz Europa in Leipzig unter einen Hut. In Fortsetzung der Auftritte im Zimmermannschen Kaffeehaus von Telemann, Bach, Fasch, Pisendel und Co. wird in einer mit Jazz vergleichbaren Aufführungssituation, aber in barocker Stilistik improvisiert. Das Podium ist offen, jeder der möchte kann mitjammen.

Enjoy the concerts, learn in the workshops, and participate in the JamSessions: Dear visitors, decide for yourself in which forms you would like to participate in the festival!

In the concerts unique and unrepeatable musical moments will be presented. Mostly, musicians who will have never played together before will meet on stage to improvise.

The workshops are aimed equally at students, professionals who want to learn more, amateurs with ambitions, children and teenagers (11-18 years, on Sunday) and those interested in historical dance (on Sunday).

In the festival venue at the HMT (Dittrichring), food will be provided during the breaks between the workshops, and a book and CD table will offer the opportunity to browse and buy.

Creative minds from all around Europe will be brought together in the EarlyMusic-JamSessions. Following the Café Zimmermann tradition of Telemann, Bach, Fasch, Pisendel and others, we will improvise in baroque style but in a performance situation which nowadays is better known in jazz. The podium is open, anyone who wants to can jam along.

Geschichte des Festivals

2009 von Christian Fischer ins Leben gerufen, findet das Festival seit 2011 im 2-jährigen Turnus jeweils im September unter der Leitung von Martin Erhardt und mit dem ausschließlichen Fokus auf historischer Improvisation erfolgreich statt. Veranstalter ist das Deutsche Institut für Improvisation e. V. mit Sitz in Leipzig.

Initiated by Christian Fischer in 2009, the festival takes place since 2011 in every uneven year in september under the direction of Martin Erhardt, with an exclusive focus on historical improvisation. Organizer is the Deutsches Institut für Improvisation e. V., which is based in Leipzig.
